I hope you had a wonderful weekend! My dad came down from Maine to Boston this past weekend to stay with us and we had the best time. Right when he got here, we walked to Newbury Street to meet three of my bridesmaids to try on wedding dresses for the first time! I had scouted a few dresses online, two in particular that I had to try before I could commit to anything else. After only trying on six dresses, I left knowing ‘the one’ was one of two options – the two I went in knowing I had to try! They are both so pretty, but very different so I’m taking a few days to weigh out which I love more.

After that, my dad, bridesmaids, and I all met up with Sergio and grabbed lunch at Joe’s American Grill. The whole day was just so enjoyable and I loved spending some quality time with my dad and girlfriends. Trying on a bunch of white, pretty dresses didn’t hurt either ;-).

No matter if I’m running errands or trying on wedding dresses (!!!!), there’s a 100% chance I want to be as comfy as possible on the weekend. Who doesn’t?! Due to that, I firmly believe that leggings can be pants, as long as it’s done correctly. I actually wore this exact outfit on Saturday because it was raining and no one has time to stress about ruining their leather boots or soaking their jeans in the city, so I loved being cozy through the entire day. I was surprised my dad didn’t make any jokes about my vest looking like a gorilla or anything haha.

If you contemplate whether it’s really okay to wear leggings as pants in public, just follow these tips to ensure you’re appropriate and cute:

1.Cover Ya Bum: I go by the rule, if you’re wearing leggings and your bum is covered, you’re 99% ready to go. Whether you’re wearing a flowy blouse or long cardigan, if your bum is covered you’re basically good to go, girl!

2.Balance It Out: My personal favorite way to pull off leggings as pants is to wear an oversized sweater to achieve an overall balance to the look. Wearing a loose top with a form-fitting bottom or vice versa, a tight top with relaxed bottoms, balances out you out. In this case, an oversized, chunky sweater will not only cover your bum, but also achieve the ‘balanced look’ by countering the tight leggings. I sized up from an XS to medium in this sweater and this one, so that they’d both have that chunky fit.

3. Dark Hues: While sometimes other neutrals can work, like this look here, I tend to lean towards slate grey and black to pair with leggings. This way, the look transitions well and the leggings blend in seamlessly.

4. Grab Those Boots: Hunter boot or black riding boots add in another hint of balance to your look. Sneakers, flip flops and flats will make your legs appear stubby and tend to look awkward with the tight ends of leggings around your ankles. I prefer to throw on boots with height to achieve, yet again, a balanced look! Also keep in mind a tall black boot will again add that seamless transition noted above 🙂

5. High-Quality Leggings: Your actual pair of leggings is also a huge factor here as well! The shape should last, the material should be thick, they shouldn’t be sheer and band should be wide. I’ve tried so many different brands and price ranges through the years.

I grabbed this pair from Nordstrom a few weeks ago and cannot believe I lived without them all these years. They may be on the high-end for leggings, but I’d prefer to have one very flattering, high-quality pair instead of five cheaper versions that may not last. You can grab them for under $55 here.

I also own this pair of faux leather leggings which are superb! If you’re looking for a “dressier” leggings, they are worth every penny. They smooth you out, suck ya in and are super chic. You can purchase them here for under $100.

I hope these four tips help next time you want to wear leggings out and about! Comfort is key, but we can be appropriate and cute while doing it! 😉
