How to Style a Cozy Bedroom Nook Homesense Mauve Velvet BenchThe second our offer was accepted on our first house, I immediately started pinning home decor on Pinterest! Since we really waited to say anything until we officially closed to be safe, I got my excitement out through home decor boards and looking through my favorite home decor retailer sites for inspiration.

While we are focusing on the downstairs living areas first, there was one area of the master bedroom I was excited to style. In the room, we have a very large dormer which provides super high vaulted ceilings and also a little inlet area. I immediately had a vision for this little spot to become a cozy little nook for Muenster to watch dogs strolling by and for me to read a book in the afternoon. I knew a velvet bench would be wonderful in this spot and may have even mentioned that idea in our open house tour.

Through my retailer strolling, I stumbled upon a pink velvet bench online that would fit the spot beautifully, but the price tag made me bookmark it and move on. I kept thinking about the piece, but knew I needed to find one that’s more affordable and honestly, a tad longer.

Then comes Homesense!

One of my girlfriends raves about Homesense which I recently learned is HomeGoods sister store. After taking one step into the Framingham, MA location a couple weekend ago, Homesense immediately become my absolute favorite home decor store.

They offer statement-making pieces, like our mauve velvet bench or modern gold chandelier, that are both luxurious feeling and looking, but with a wallet-friendly price tag. You should have seen my face when we walked in and there was a pink mauve bench better than the one I bookmarked online and at 1/4 the price! I kept telling S that it was meant to be 😉

Psst.. Keep en eye out on Instagram alter today as there will be a huge giveaway for you and three friends!

I’m working with Homesense on a collaboration aside from this blog post which is why you’ll see that many of the items were gifted for me to curate an area of my home. I knew that once I shared this cozy little nook, that I’d get questions on item sources so I wanted to share them via a blog post and share tips on

1.GET DIMENSIONS RIGHT: One thing that makes an area of a room fall short compared to ‘Pinterest-worthy’ homes online are dimensions. When I saw the mauve bench in Homesense, I waited to get my hopes up because the dimensions needed to be right.

Once we confirmed they were, I did a happy dance and said “OMG OMG NO WAY! IT CAN’T BE!!!” ten too many times. Poor S 😉  If the bench was shorter in length, the huge dormer would have swallowed it up, leaving the space look awkward and anything but cozy.

The same goes for purchasing pieces online. While an item may look ‘perfect’ for a spot you’re curating, the wrong dimensions will make the area fall short.

Before we visited Homesense, we had no idea what area we were going to design since we didn’t know what pieces would be available in store, like with HomeGoods. Due to this, we measured each area of our home that we were interested in designing like the master dormer nook, entry way, living room coffee table area and one hallway we have.

For each spot, we listed in a note on our phone: the ideal measurement of a piece, the smallest we were willing to go and also the largest. From that, we had our notes to go off of while in store and whipping out our measuring tape. Having our spaces measured and a measuring tape on hand while shopping made the designing process so much easier [no returns and everything fit perfectly] and super fun!

From the bench to the chandelier to the blankets and weaved basket – each has a varying textures that plays off and compliments one another.

We added one of our wedding photos, a candle from our Paris honeymoon and a floral arrangement my girlfriend sent us.

While I said we should take a break five different times, he trucked along and got the job done. And we learned a lot 😆

I can’t wait to share more home decor content with you while we make our first house a home! While many of our pieces are sources in store, I tried to find similar options and shared them in the widget below. Thanks for stopping by! Xo Mindy
